Event Log

The Event Log provides a record of executed Tasks in the system and is accessed by selecting View Event Log from the System Menu. When accessed, the Event Log opens as a separate window which can remain open while navigating through the MetrixIDR user interface.

The Event Log shows system and event messages whether generated by scheduled tasks or user generated tasks. The display contains three sections.

  • The top section shows the list of system and user generated tasks.
  • The middle section displays subtasks related to the selected task in the top section.
  • The bottom section displays specific descriptions and debugging information associated with the selected task.

The displayed contents show the task that generated the event, the status, category, user, computer, start time, stop time, duration and message counts for Errors, Warnings, and Informational messages.

Top Section Display

The top section shows the selected task, status and task run information, as well as counts for three types of messages (Errors, Warnings, and Informational) that resulted from its execution.  Associated with each log entry is a status flag indicating whether the log entry is in progress, completed, completed with warnings, and completed with errors. The following fields are shown in this section.

  • Status. The current status of the task. The status is either running, completed, completed with warnings, or completed with errors.
  • Application. Application which ran the task.
  • Computer. The computer that ran the task.
  • User. The user that ran the task.
  • Category. The name of the task.
  • Time Started. The time the task started.
  • Time Finished. The time the task finished.
  • Duration. The length of time the task took to complete.
  • Errors. The number of errors generated when the task ran.
  • Warnings. The number of warnings generated when the task ran.
  • Info. The number of information messages generated when the task ran.
  • Automated. True/False indicator for whether the task run was automated or manual.
  • User Marked as Finished. True/False indicator for whether the task was marked as completed by a user.

The Top Section list can be sorted and filtered using common List Tabs features.

Middle Section Display

The middle section shows the subtasks for each selected task in the top section.  This section shows the subtask message description and the date/time of generation.

Bottom Section Display

The bottom section contains two tabs, Description and Debug Info. These tables are described below.

  • The Description Tab displays the log entry description for the selected subtask.
  • The Debug Info Tab displays the stack trace and/or SQL dump details for the selected task.

Toolbar Actions

The following actions are available from the Event Log toolbar:

  • Filter. This drop-down box contains three groups of filters, labeled Public, Private and Standard. Public and Private filters are user defined and are created by pressing the Save Filter button on the toolbar. The Standard filters are based on historical time frames and include the following: Today, Last 24 Hours, Yesterday, Last 3 Days, Last 7 Days, This Week, Last Week, This Month, Last Month, Two Months, Three Months, Six Months, Year, and All.
  • Refresh. Refreshes the Log.
  • Enable Auto Refresh. This toggle enables or disables the Auto Refresh. The Auto Refresh Interval is defined in the Log Menu.
  • Filter Editor.
  • Filter by Selection.
  • Apply Filter.
  • Clear Filter.
  • Save Filter
  • Show Running Tasks. Displays tasks that are currently in progress.
  • Show Task that Completed without Errors or Warnings. Displays successfully completed tasks.
  • Show Completed Tasks that had Errors Occur. Displays tasks that completed with errors.
  • Show Completed Tasks that had Warnings Occur. Displays tasks that completed with warnings, but without errors.
  • Export to Excel. Exports the filtered contents of the Event Log to Excel.
  • Enable Durations Mode. Enables the durations mode for displaying sub-tasks.

Subtasks Toolbar Actions

The following actions are available from the Subtasks toolbar:

  • Filter Editor.
  • Filter by Selection.
  • Apply Filter.
  • Clear Filter.
  • Show Info Messages. Displays information messages.
  • Show Warning Messages. Displays warning messages.
  • Show Error Messages. Displays error messages.
  • Email Selected Event Detail to MetrixIDR Support.
  • Export to Excel. Exports the sub-tasks for the selected task to Excel.
