About this guide

This guide explains how to install and use Field Deployment Manager (FDM) Tools on a supported mobile data collection device, such as a handheld or laptop computer. It includes the following chapters and appendices:

  • Chapter 1, Introduction (which you are reading now), provides a general overview of Field Deployment Manager (FDM) and this document.
  • Chapter 2, Installing FDM , lists the hardware components required to run FDM, explains how to install the application on handhelds and laptops, and describes the setup of Bluetooth and USB devices for use with FDM.
  • Chapter 3, Getting Started, explains the basic components of FDM and how to use them.
  • Chapter 4, Working with Endpoints, provides an overview of how to use the Tools menus and action commands.
  • Chapter 5, Working With Basic Security Endpoints, applies only to endpoints and operate at Itron's basic security level, including enhanced security capable endpoints that are operating with enhanced security disabled. It explains how to perform action commands to read and program basic security endpoints and perform other endpoint-related tasks.
  • Chapter 6, Working with Enhanced Security Capable Endpoints, applies to enhanced security capable endpoints that are operating with enhanced security enabled and multi-mode capable devices that are operating in Mobile (ChoiceConnect) mode. It explains how to perform action commands to read and program endpoints and perform other endpoint-related tasks.
  • Chapter 7, Working with Multi-Mode Capable Devices, applies to endpoints that are able to operate in both Mobile (ChoiceConnect) and Network (OpenWay Riva) environments. It explains how to perform action commands to read, program switch operational modes, and perform other endpoint-related tasks.
  • Chapter 8, Working with OpenWay CENTRON Meters , explains how to use FDM along with an OpenWay Zigbee Radio or a supported optical probe connected to your handheld or laptop, to read, program, and diagnose OpenWay CENTRON endpoints.
  • Chapter 9, Working with OpenWay Riva Electricity Devices, explains how to use FDM to work with OpenWay Riva electricity devices.
  • Chapter 10, Working with Gen5 Riva Electricity Devices, explains how to use FDM to work with Gen5 Riva electricity meters.
  • Chapter 11, Working with the Gen5 ERT Gateway Device, explains how to work with the Gen5 ERT Gateway device.
  • Appendix A, Handheld-Endpoint Orientation, explains how best to orient a handheld's antenna relative to an endpoint's internal antenna for the best possible communications between the two devices.
  • Appendix B, 60WP and 80W-i Endpoint Programming Mode Activation, explains how to use a magnet to activate Itron's 60WP and 80W-i endpoints before checking, programming, resetting, or unlocking them.
  • Appendix C, 2.4GZ OpenWay Gas Module Programming Mode Activation, explains how to use a magnet to activate Itron's 2.4GZ OpenWay Gas Modules and 2.4ZR OpenWay Range Extenders before reading, checking, or programming them; setting their activation modes; or resetting their network keys.
  • Appendix D, 100G DL Module Factory Reset Operation, explains how to use a magnet to complete the Factory Reset operation on a locked 100G DL endpoint.
  • Appendix E, Intelis Gas Meter Test Mode Operations and Recalibration, explains how to use FDM along with a prover station to test the accuracy of an Intelis Gas Meter and to recalibrate the meter if needed, based on accuracy test results.
  • Appendix F, Working with GE DresserĀ® Roots Series B3 and LM-MA Registers, provides information required for programming and checking endpoints installed for use with some GE Dresser Series B3 and LM-MA meter registers.
  • Appendix G, Endpoint Tamper/Event Code Descriptions, explains the meanings of tamper/event codes generated by Itron endpoints, grouped by market type.
  • Appendix H, Determining meter size and number of sensor boards, explains how to determine the meter's size and number of sensor boards (printed circuit boards) when programming an endpoint for formatted reads.
