Working with Multi-Mode Capable Devices

Multi-mode capable devices can be configured to operate in more than one of Itron's supported operating modes and include the following devices:

  • Intelis Gas Meters

  • OW Riva Intelis 250/425 Gas Meter

    • This name in the FDM user interface represents Intelis 425 Gas Meter and Intelis 250 Gas Meter with optional pressure sensing.

  • Gen5 Intelis Gas Meter

  • OpenWay Riva 500G ERT Module

  • OpenWay Riva 500W ERT Module

  • Gen5 500G ERT Module

  • Gen5 500W ERT Module

  • Itron Cellular 500G Module

  • Itron Cellular 500W Module

  • OpenWay Riva Gas Disconnect (OWR-GRD)

These devices require FDM to facilitate signed authorizations, key and command exchanges issued by Itron Security Manager (ISM), to switch operational modes, and to perform installation, programming, and other commands locally at the meter or endpoint. See Retrieving Secure Commands from the FDM Server. The operational modes that Itron multi-mode capable devices can operate in are:

  • Mobile (ChoiceConnect) mode. While operating in mobile mode, the endpoint functions as enhanced security capable endpoint. Multi-mode capable endpoints operating in mobile mode use SCM+ communications standards and can be set to run at any of three security levels. If your multi-mode capable device is operating in Mobile (ChoiceConnect) mode, see Working with Enhanced Security Capable Endpoints for details about working with your device.

  • Network mode. While operating in network mode, the endpoint communicates with the HES and other network devices. Multi-mode capable endpoints operating in network mode use COSEM communication standards. If your multi-mode capable device is operating in Network mode, continue reading this section, and see Working with Devices in Network Mode.

  • (CENTRON R450 Advanced/Bridge meter only) OpenWay mode. While operating in OpenWay mode, the CENTRON R450 Advanced/Bridge functions as an OpenWay CENTRON meter. If your CENTRON R450 Advanced/Bridge meter is operating in OpenWay mode, see Working with OpenWay CENTRON Meters for details about working with the meter. If your CENTRON R450 Advanced/Bridge meter is operating in Mobile (ChoiceConnect) mode, see Working with Enhanced Security Capable Endpoints.
