Scale unscaled estimates

IEE’s scaling functionality allows scaling of unscaled estimates. For example, in a reading container, we import 24 hours' worth of interval reads into IEE. The register reads can be timestamped any time of the day and may not be at the start or end of the reading container. The interval gaps fail validation, and subsequently they get estimated.

The estimation is done using whichever estimation routines had been specified (numerical replacement, linear interpolation, historical estimation, etc.). So it is possible that after the estimation, the sum of all intervals in the reading container do not add up to the register reads within the specified boundary tolerance. These are referred to as unscaled estimates.

The scaling functionality adjusts the interval estimates, so that when we add up all the intervals in the container, they match the difference between the start and end reads for all available registers. These intervals are referred to as scaled estimates.

Scale Unscaled Estimates automatically detects and scales unscaled estimates after allowing adequate time for collecting and importing the missing intervals and registers. After a configurable number of days, the Bulk Estimation service attempts to scale the unscaled estimates. The Pending Estimations user interface shows pending unscaled estimates (filter with Starting Point = ‘Extended Scaling’). Estimation results are available from the Estimation Logs user interface.

The scaling option you specify in the estimation set applies to all scaling operations that use the estimation set. whether it is:

  • No scaling
  • Scaling using boundary reads
  • Allow partial scaling
  • TOU scaling
  • Partial TOU

This includes:

  • Automated estimation and scaling that occurs during a readings import (if enabled)
  • Manual estimation and scaling that is triggered by an operator from the UI
  • The Scaled Unscaled Estimates (SUE) process.

All of these scaling operations follow the same behavior, based on the selected scaling option.
