HAN device communications

SAP sends messages to HAN devices by sending the message request to MDUS, which passes the message to the smart meter. The smart meter then passes the message to the HAN device. HAN devices can also send data such as events to the smart meter.

It is possible for HAN devices and smart meters to have different time zones. The HAN device obtains its time zone from the meter program by default. However, consumers can change the time zone on their HAN devices.

When the meter and HAN device have different time zones, the time stamps on HAN communications may seem incorrect because they are not based on the time zone defined in the meter program.

For example, the HAN time zone is Pacific U.S. and the meter program is Eastern U.S. The Eastern U.S. time is three hours later than Pacific U.S. time. The utility sends a message to the HAN device that says the service will be disconnected at 9:00 AM. The consumer expects to be disconnected at 9:00 AM Pacific, but the utility disconnects the service at 9:00 AM Eastern, which is 6:00 AM Pacific.
