Notes:

1 Itron takes into consideration the release plans and End of Mainstream Support for major Operating Systems and Databases when making technology support decisions.

2 Itron must have the appropriate expertise and environments to verify the technology supports our MDM capabilities at enterprise scale.

3 In lieu of specific virtualization technologies, Itron recommends a persistent VDI (virtual desktop infrastructure) that support one of IEE MDM's supported operating systems for remote desktop virtualization. Many vendors support remote desktop virtualization, including those used by IEE MDM customers today: Citrix (XenDesktop), Microsoft (Hyper-V), and VMware (vSphere & Horizon View).

4 We only support technologies listed in this IEE MDM Technology Support Matrix. If it’s not listed, we don’t support it.

5 When running unsupported technology, the utility must recreate issues in a supported environment (or provide access to your environment) before Itron can remediate any software issues.

6 When running unsupported technology, you may purchase support on a time and materials basis at the current Itron rate.

7 The official IEE MDM Technology Matrix is available through the Itron Online Help Landing page.

8 The 3rd Party Mainstream and Extended dates are provided for convenience only. Official support dates can be found on the vendor's product support lifecycle page. When 3rd party technologies expire (end of extended support), Itron does not remove said technology from the matrix until the supporting IEE versions (columns) are dropped from the matrix. This provides consistency between technology matrix versions.

9 Support dates shown above, in red, have expired. Dates that will expire within six months, of the published date, are shown in blue. Changes to the matrix, since the last update, are listed in the IEE technology matrix revision history table.

10 Web browser support is for web applications such as IEE Web UI screens, and IEE CSR Portal.

11 Planned support for new technologies will be added to the matrix for reference. Planned target dates indicate when our tests will be completed. Based on successful test results, Itron will announce support in a specific hot fix release.

12 The IEE MDM Technology Support Matrix is the official record of supported technologies. Some product documentation, such as installation guides mention versions of third party technologies. When conflicts arise, the IEE MDM Technology Support Matrix supersedes product guides.

13 Some technology names have changed to align with 3rd party vendor naming. For example, Oracle Database versions, Pervasive changed to Actian. We also removed the (64 bit) distinction since we dropped unsupported IEE releases that supported both 32 bit and 64 bit operating systems.

14 In July 2019, Oracle's Lifetime Support Technology (doc ID 069183) explained versioning changes: "The 18c and 19c releases follow the Lifetime Support timeframes for 12.2. The versioning has been modified so that 18c replaces 12.2.0.2 and 19c replaces 12.2.0.3". During IEE 10.0 testing, Itron determined that Oracle 18c and 19c require ORACLE DATABASE overlay patches 27935464 and 30830887. These overlay patches are required for all IEE 10.x versions.

15 The IEE MDM Technology Matrix includes supported database versions. Please refer to database vendor's specification to determine their list of supported operation systems.

16 The Standard edition of Microsoft SQL Server 2019 or later supports table partitioning, so IEE 10.1 or later will support this version. Prior Standard versions of Microsoft SQL Server did not support partitioning; therefore, IEE only supports the Enterprise editions.

17 See https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle/faq/internet-explorer-microsoft-edge.

18 Microsoft SQL Server 2019 or later must be run in Compatibility Level 140 (i.e. 2017 mode). You must alter the compatibility level when installing Microsoft SQL Server 2019 in a new environment, or upgrading from an older (i.e. pre-2017) SQL Server version. Microsoft automatically sets the Compatibility Level to 140 when upgrading from SQL Server 2017. Use the following command to alter the Compatibility Level: ‘ALTER DATABASE ItronEE SET COMPATIBILITY_LEVEL = 140’

19 .NET 6.0 is used by IEE REST APIs. These REST APIs are installed as Windows services using the Web UI 2.2 or later installer.

20 On Microsoft SQL Server platform, Active Storage Manager is supported on Standard and Enterprise Editions of SQL Server 2019 or later.

21 Microsoft SQL Server Standard Editions are limited to environments with a maximum of 24 cores and/or 128 GB of RAM. Microsoft SQL Server Enterprise Edition is required when an environment requires more than 24 cores or 128 GB of RAM.

22 IEE supports Severity 1 and Severity 2 issues for all 10.x versions on Standard support; however, we reserve the right to only fix Severity 1 and Severity 2 issues on the latest minor release (for example, version 10.4).

Virtualization

Itron recommendations

  • In lieu of specific virtualization technologies, Itron recommends a persistent virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) that supports one of IEE MDM's supported operating systems for remote desktop virtualization. Many vendors support remote desktop virtualization, including those used by IEE MDM customers today: Citrix (XenDesktop), Microsoft (Hyper-V), and VMware (vSphere & Horizon View).

  • Itron does not recommend, nor supports, running IEE MDM in a non-persistent VDI environment. This includes presentation virtualization and application virtualization solutions including Citrix XenApp, Microsoft App-V, and VMware ThinApp.

  • Itron recommends thorough testing of a system configuration prior to implementation in production.

Successful IEE MDM virtualized environments

  • For many years, Itron has been testing IEE MDM using VMware vSphere. In 2018, Itron also added Nutanix Acropolis Hypervisor (AHV) and Microsoft Azure virtual.

  • Current Itron customers run production IEE MDM environments on virtualization technologies from the vendors: Citrix, Microsoft, VMware.

Virtual environment sizing

  • With sufficient hardware resources and proper configuration, well-established tier-1 virtualized environments will be able to support the IEE web applications.

  • It is imperative that the sizing of the VM (Guest) partitions incorporate a dedicated number of cores and memory resources that matches Itron's physical hardware recommendations. Physical (Host) server resources should exceed the dedicated allocations to support additional overhead required by the virtualized environments for proper operation.

IEE MDM Support Services

  • When operating on virtual technology, you may be asked to replicate an issue on a supported (physical) platform if Itron Support Services suspects it may be due to the virtual environment.

  • Alternatively, you may share access to your environment via remote access if allowed by your IT policies. This eliminates issues caused by compatibility issues between the virtualization technology and the supported operating system.

  • Itron can work with customers, on a project (billable) basis, to investigate performance issues in their environment. Performance issues that are found in virtual environments are not treated as product defects. Furthermore, Itron has no obligation to make code changes to improve performance in virtual environments as a maintenance activity.
