About Distributed Intelligence (DI)

Itron's advanced IoT networks support Distributed Intelligence (DI) applications, which enable intelligent analytics capabilities at the edge.

Devices that have DI capability, such as the Itron Riva meter, can run intelligent DI agents inside the meter. This agent performs analysis at the edge, i.e., on the network, the meter itself, and other devices in the network such as meters, sensors, or network devices in the area.

This is different from the traditional back-office analytics, where all the data from the network and devices has to be transferred to a back-office system for data crunching. Itron meters provide the processing power to perform this analysis at the edge, giving more immediate and accurate results.

Itron’s open platform and DI Developer Program enable third parties to develop innovative DI applications to solve a utility’s unique challenges and deploy them on Itron’s IoT network.

In the back office, a data platform can subscribe to this DI data, events, and alarms, and provide web presentment for the DI applications.
