ESN parsing details

The following figure and table describe how Itron Analytics parses ESN numbers during import. An ESN number can replace the serial number in some MDI, CRF or CEF import files or OpenWay Collection Manager API. If you encounter errors during import, that you are unable to resolve using the following information, please contact Itron Customer Support.

  1. ANSI-specific code. The seven-digit American National Standards Institute (ANSI) code. For Itron Analytics to recognize this code, the code must be 2.16.840.1.

  2. Company ID. The six-digit company ID for Itron devices. This code is 114416.

  3. Device type ID. A two-digit ID that indicates the device's commodity type, and which section of the ESN is the serial number.

    • 0-10, 12-14, 18, 34. Commodity type is electric. The device's serial number is in the Serial number section (5)

    • 11, 15, 35. Commodity type is electric. The device requires use of the optional customer ID (4).

    • 16, 19, 21, 22, 24, 26, 28. Commodity type is gas. The device's serial number is in the Serial number section (5).

    • 17, 20, 25, 29, 37. Commodity type is water. The device's serial number is in the Serial number section (5).

  4. (Optional) customer ID. An optional identification number. This section is used by device types (3)11, 15, or 35.

  5. Serial number. The device's serial number for all devices except those with device types (3) 11, 15, or 35.
