Retrieving Secure Commands from the FDM Server

The Get Commands function is designed for use with secured endpoints that have been configured to respond only to secure or signed commands issued by Itron Security Manager (ISM). The Get Commands function lets you retrieve secure commands and key exchange commands from the FDM server for later use with secured endpoints. Clicking the Get Commands icon () opens a command retrieval screen in which you can enter the IDs and device types of the endpoints you plan to work with. You can type this information into the screen manually or scan it from a bar coded list of endpoints.

Your handheld or laptop must be connected to the FDM server for the mobile application to perform the Get Commands function. If your mobile device can establish an internet connection to the FDM server, you can also open the Get Commands screen and retrieve secure commands while working in the field.

After you initiate the Get Commands function, the FDM mobile application retrieves the secure commands issued by ISM for each endpoint, as well as a list of the commands you have permission to perform. It also retrieves any required key exchange commands sent from ISM by your FDM system’s security officer. Once you have retrieved this information from the server, you are ready to work with the secured endpoints you listed in the command retrieval screen.

Important!  You can successfully issue a secure command to a secured endpoint only once. After that, you cannot perform the command’s function again without first downloading another secure command from the server. If you attempt to send a secure command to an endpoint after that command has already been successfully sent to that endpoint (for instance, by another FSR’s mobile device), the endpoint responds by sending the previously sent information, along with a message indicating that the command is a replay. In rare cases, the endpoint may erroneously indicate a replay.
