Introduction
Distributed Intelligence (DI)—and the meters that enable it—are leveraged on Itron’s Gen5 Network or OpenWay Riva Network to deliver resolutions to the most critical challenges facing utilities and their customers. Proprietary algorithms that run on Gen5 Riva Electricity Meters (for solutions supported by the Gen5 Network) and OpenWay Riva Electricity Meters (supported by the OpenWay Riva ACT Network) collect high-resolution advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) data needed to address such issues as:
-
Outage detection and analysis
-
Transformer load management
-
Renewables integration
-
Detection of unsafe grid conditions
In real time, locally within a meter, AMI data is processed by DI algorithms into data sets. These data sets are called outcome data. Outcome data is sent over the network in encrypted packets to the DI Analytics Platform. The DI Analytics Platform comprises applications that support data import, analysis, and storage, and includes the Customer Analytics Portal, where outcome data is presented in user-facing applications. Utility personnel use the apps to view, analyze, forecast, and plan improvements to grid efficiency, and safety.
The outcome data a utility receives is determined by the specific apps they choose to license from Itron. Itron Enterprise Application Center (EAC) is a web-based interface where utility users view available DI apps and versions, maintain DI application licenses, install licensed DI applications on compatible meters, track application/version-to-meter relationships, and more.
Itron offers the DI Developer Program, a third-party development program for DI,inviting new and innovative approaches to solving critical challenges facing the world’s power grids. Utilities and other third-party developers may develop apps, test them within a secured environment, and apply for the app’s certification and deployment within Itron’s DI meters and networks.
As a member of the DI Developer Program, you will receive the DI software developer kit (SDK) and developer guides.
